Hyundai IONIQ 9 fully electric 7-seat SUV now on sale in Australia

Hyundai is getting ready to launch its new IONIQ 9 fully electric large SUV in Australia, and has just confirmed local specs and prices for the new contraption.

Well, to make things easy, the IONIQ 9 is being offered in one top-spec trim, the Calligraphy. But it is presented in either 7-seat form, or, for $2000 more, a luxurious 6-seat configuration.

Power comes from a 110.3kWh battery that provides an impressive WLTP range of 600km. Energy is sent to two electric motors, both producing 157kW and 350Nm each. Combined, you’ve got 314kW and 700Nm, which translates to a 0-100km/h claim of 5.2 seconds.

Hyundai is pitching this as a full size SUV that promises “lounge-like” space and comfort, while offering “greater value” over some three-row fully electric SUV rivals.

Technology highlights include dual 12.3-inch screens on the dash in a curved arrangement, an Australia first Digital Key 2 and Google Places Search, as well as Bluelink connectivity, over-the-air updates, and optional digital side mirrors ($3000).

There’s also Hyundai’s latest Connected Car Navigation Cockpit system, which incorporates AI voice recognition, and quicker access to common functions via a pull-down in-screen button set.

Pixelated lighting in Hyundai’s latest theme gives the exterior a unique and futuristic touch, with design elements borrowed from the Hyundai SEVEN concept car from a few years ago – sans rear-hinged rear doors. Speaking about the new model, Hyundai Australia CEO, Don Romano, said:

“As our first three-row, all electric SUV, IONIQ 9 is a milestone vehicle, underscoring Hyundai’s EV leadership and our continuing commitment to innovation. IONIQ 9 blends lounge-like space, distinctive aerodynamic design, and an advanced user experience to create a captivating and luxurious family vehicle.”

The Hyundai IONIQ 9 is on sale now priced from $119,750 (excluding on-road costs), making it the new most expensive Hyundai model ever – above the IONIQ 5 N (from $110,383).
