Deepal ute details leaked, PHEV powertrain up to 480kW – Exclusive

Deepal is working on a new heavy-duty ute to compete with the likes of the BYD Shark 6 and GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV, and we’ve discovered some of the initial details and specs ahead of its launch in 2026.

Firstly, the design (above image is speculative rendering only) is expected to take on a rough and rugged theme with upright lines and boxy contours and edges, a bit like the latest Ford Ranger and BYD Shark, and the incoming Chery ute (shown below in patent image form).

Interestingly, it is set to use a uni-body design like the Chery patent image below, whereby the cargo area is formed as part of the cabin glasshouse, making it impossible to fit a custom tray or toolbox. But this could bring improved refinement over the old separated design. The incoming LDV Terron 9 is the same, as well as the Deepal E07 ‘soft-duty’ ute (bottom image).

As for the specs, we’ve heard from sources who prefer to remain anonymous that this new ute will be slightly larger than the current crew, standing around 5.6m long and it is set to feature double wishbone suspension front and rear, like the Shark 6.

Power is set to come from a plug-in hybrid system incorporating a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol, which acts more like a generator than a direct drive feed. However, as far as we know the engine will be capable of providing direct drive as well in certain circumstances. All providing all-wheel drive in any case.

Outputs could be quite impressive, with our sources suggesting two versions; one with around 340kW and another with just under 500kW. The base model could cross 0-100km/h in around 5.1 seconds, which would eclipse the Shark 6 (5.7 seconds) and GWM Alpha PHEV (no official claim but our testing has seen 7.05 seconds). The Ford Ranger Stormtrak PHEV has clocked the sprint in 7.96 seconds.

In terms of range, we’re seeing figures of up to the 200km mark, again, that would better the Shark 6 (100km), GWM Alpha PHEV (115km), and Ranger PHEV (49km). Not only that, the would be one of the longest ranges for any PHEV on sale, regardless of being a ute, if our sources are accurate.

We’re hearing there will be around four trim levels, all offering a 3500kg braked towing capacity, with an available front diff lock (as well as rear). There’s also word of cool accessories becoming available like a dog box, camping tents, and canopies.

All are set to boast a massive 17-inch and 12.3-inch screen on the dash, with a chunky interior layout with plenty of rugged-style toggle switches. Take a look at the exterior and you’ll get the direction the company is going with this.

When will it go on sale in Australia? It’s too early to know for sure, but indications suggest later in 2026. These new-to-Australia car brands are quite quick however, so it could come sooner than expected. Stay tuned.
