2025 MG MG5 updates result in 3-star ANCAP safety rating

After a dismal zero star showing in 2023, the MG MG5 has somewhat redeemed itself for 2025 with safety upgrades resulting in a 3-star ANCAP rating.

Revisions to the small sedan include seatbelt pre-tensioners and a more comprehensive ADAS suite in the form of MG Pilot. These include improved AEB to detect cars, pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists in a wider range of conditions. Lane-keep assist and emergency lane keeping is now part of the MG5’s repertoire.

As a result, Adult Occupant Protection is up to 62 per cent, Child Occupant Protection is now at 68 per cent, Vulnerable Road User score is up to 65 per cent, and Safety Assist improves dramatically to 59 per cent.

This updated score applies to all vehicles built from November 2024 onwards of this generation of MG5.

More impressively, the MG5’s pricing has not been affected by the safety upgrades, with the entry Vibe priced from $24,990 drive-away and the turbocharged Essence from $29,990.

This means it remains Australia’s cheapest sedan, but if you want something with a five-star ANCAP score we’d suggest looking at the Hyundai i30 sedan, Kia K4 or Toyota Corolla.
