Ferrari has taken the wraps off its latest special edition, the 296 Speciale. It’s a more focused and more powerful evolution of the 296 GTB. Revealed in Maranello this week, this new plug-in hybrid supercar is engineered to offer sharper dynamics, increased downforce, and a more visceral driving experience unlike any other in the brand’s current lineup.
At the heart of the 296 Speciale is an uprated version of Ferrari’s 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 powertrain, which now develops a combined 880PS (647kW). That’s 50 more than the standard 296 GTB. That power is split between the combustion engine, now producing 700PS (515kW), and an upgraded electric motor that contributes 180PS (132kW) in a new ‘extra boost’ mode.
Ferrari says the new model sets a benchmark for rear-wheel-drive performance, boasting a class-leading power-to-weight ratio of 1.60kg/PS. A 60kg weight reduction has been achieved through the use of titanium engine components and extensive carbon fibre throughout the bodywork.
Downforce has also been increased significantly, with 435kg generated at 250km/h – 20 per cent more than the regular GTB – thanks to a reworked aerodynamic package inspired by Ferrari’s one-make Challenge race cars. Highlights include a new aero damper under the bonnet, vertical fins at the rear, and an active spoiler system capable of switching configurations more quickly and precisely than before.
The chassis has been thoroughly revised, sitting 5mm lower and benefiting from retuned suspension and electronic systems including the latest ABS Evo. Ferrari claims lateral control and cornering predictability are vastly improved, with roll angle reduced by 13 per cent.
Inside, drivers can make the most of the hybrid system through Ferrari’s eManettino drive mode selector, which adjusts the balance between electric and petrol power. Up to 25km of fully electric range is available, but the real focus is maximum engagement when everything is operating in unison.
Ferrari has not yet confirmed local Australian pricing or delivery timing, but the 296 Speciale is expected to be produced in limited numbers, continuing the legacy of special-edition berlinettas such as the 458 Speciale and 488 Pista. An open-top spider version is also available, called the Speciale A.
