2026 Lexus RZ revealed, adds 300kW ‘RZ 550e F Sport’ variant

Lexus is preparing to introduce a significantly updated version of its RZ electric SUV, with a range of improvements designed to enhance performance, driving dynamics, and overall refinement. There’s also an exciting new flagship variant coming, called the RZ 550e F Sport. All very encouraging and exciting letters and numbers. But will it be enough to energise sales?

During 2024, Lexus sold just 215 examples of the RZ, according to VFACTS figures. That’s a drop in the ocean compared with the 2075 RX models it delivered. Across the first two months of this year, just 18 examples have been shifted, which is down 43.8 per cent on the same two-month period in 2024. It’s not off to a good start.

Leading the 2026 lineup is the RZ 500e, which benefits from a decent power increase of 50kW, bringing the total output to 280kW. But also joining the range is the new flagship variant, the RZ 550e F Sport, which boasts an even higher 300kW output for a more performance-focused driving experience. Acceleration across 0-100km/h is claimed in 4.4 seconds in the F Sport, and 4.6 seconds in the new RZ 500e.

Underpinning the improvements is a completely redesigned battery system featuring an upgraded high-capacity lithium-ion unit. The new pack has a total capacity of 76.96kWh, contributing to a 14 per cent increase in driving range, now rated at up to 500km. Charging efficiency has also been optimised, with recharge times cut by up to 30 minutes, aided by an improved inverter and optimised onboard charging system.

The RZ’s advanced DIRECT4 all-wheel drive system has been further refined to deliver superior traction and stability. It dynamically adjusts torque distribution between the front and rear axles in real time, enhancing cornering, straight-line acceleration, and overall driving confidence. The system now shifts power seamlessly from a 60:40 front-rear split to a full 0:100 rear bias, depending on driving conditions.

For those seeking a heightened level of driver engagement, the RZ 550e F Sport debuts an innovative Interactive Manual Drive system. This feature emulates the control of a conventional manual transmission, with a virtual eight-speed gearbox and engine-like sound effects that synchronise with acceleration and deceleration.

Lexus has also focused on refining the suspension and chassis to improve comfort and handling. The front and rear have been retuned with revised damper rates, providing a more stable and composed ride. Additional structural reinforcements to the body improve rigidity, resulting in sharper steering response and reduced vibrations.

Inside, the RZ’s cabin continues to embody Lexus’s commitment to luxury and sustainability. A dimmable panoramic roof enhances the sense of openness, while new Ultrasuede trim, containing approximately 30 per cent plant-based materials, adds an eco-conscious touch. Laser-etched graphics on the door panels introduce a fresh design element.

Noise insulation has also been a key focus, with extensive soundproofing measures applied to various parts of the cabin. Enhanced door trims, a new rear floor silencer, and additional soundproofing materials work together to reduce road noise and create an exceptionally quiet driving experience. Not that an EV is loud in the first place.

Final specifications and pricing for the 2026 Lexus RZ lineup will be confirmed closer to its launch in Australia later this year.
