Ford is gunning for a Nurburgring lap record with its epic – and unfortunately not-for-Australia – Mustang GTD, and it has just sent out a teaser video to preview some of the ups and downs of taking on such a feat.
The Ford Mustang GTD is a track-focused variant of the Mustang, and Ford is hoping to break a record at the German track as the quickest American muscle car.
It has a pretty good chance, as it’s like a Porsche 911 GT3 of Mustangs, featuring crazy aero enhancements such as a massive rear wing, as well as a 5.2-litre supercharged V8 engine that produces around 597kW (800hp).
With serious equipment such as dry-sump lubrication, a titanium exhaust, an eight-speed dual-clutch transaxle gearbox (rear mounted), and proper pushrod-style suspension with horizontal coilovers, and carbon ceramic brakes, it is the wildest road-legal Mustang ever.
So, it’s no wonder Ford is targeting a sub-7-minute Nurburgring lap time. And it should be able to get there with all of that stuff. We won’t know how it goes until October 29, when Ford releases a short film about the attempt. A teaser of that film has just been released (below).
If it cracks a 6-minute lap, it’ll be the first American sports car to ever do so – as an official ‘showroom’ model. A trailer for the short film will be released on October 23.
