Hyundai Initium hydrogen concept previews new model for 2025

Hyundai has unveiled an interesting new concept car called the Initium, which not only showcases advanced hydrogen fuel cell technology but also presents a new design direction for the company.

The Initium features a new ‘Art of Steel’ design philosophy, which is described as pushing the formability of steel to the extreme. It also includes various details to signal its hydrogen and future-driven focus, such as ‘+’ graphics in the bumper, and the HTWO symbol.

As for the shape itself, the concept is presented as a practical SUV, with solid lines and set of 21-inch wheels, along with a roof rack system for adventurous inspiration. It has all been created following three key aspects; driving range and performance, interior space and practicality, and unique convenience ideas and safety measures.

Underneath it all is a new hydrogen fuel cell system incorporating large tanks, providing a range of over 650km. These help power an electric motor that produces up to 150kW. There’s also vehicle-to-load functionality, allowing users to power or charge appliances, including via a 220V household socket.

The interior opens to a large and open living space, with reclining rear seats for added comfort and big door openings so it’s easy to get in and out of. There’s also digital screens across the dash and an in-built fuel-cell-specific route planner in the sat-nav, designed to make travel as fuss-free as possible.

Hyundai is planning to introduce a new FCEV (fuel cell electric vehicle) inspired by the Initium concept in 2025. It’s unknown what name it will adopt, but it is set to showcase a similar design and features as this concept. Jaehoon Chang, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company, said:

“Hyundai Motor’s clear, unwavering commitment to hydrogen over the past 27 years is rooted in our belief in its potential as a clean, accessible and therefore fair energy source for everyone. We are dedicated to pioneering a future where hydrogen is used by everyone, in everything, and everywhere.”
