The 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed brings a lot of excitement to the lower east English countryside every July, with noises from some of the most desirable and unusual machines the world has ever seen.
This modified McLaren 650S-turned-P1, commissioned by ‘ Mad Mike’ Whiddett, takes one of the rarest and most exclusive cars McLaren ever made – billed, at the time, as the F1’s successor – and bastardises it in the most glorious way imaginable. In place of the old 3.8-litre V8 now sits a three-rotor Mazda 20B, with billet casing and the wick wound up to 1000hp (746kW).
Handling power transfer duties is an X-Trac six-speed sequential gearbox and transfer case. As this is a drift beast, bespoke coilovers, steering rack with more angle as well as Rotiform wheels and Toyo tyres report for duty, with the requisite hydraulic handbrake to send this animal sliding and bwapping.
To add even more visual drama to what is already a teenager’s poster car, a Rocket Bunny bodykit ramps up the aggression factor and Red Bull livery means there is no mistaking this thing for the “regular” McLaren P1.
Created by Lanzante and completed in just 100 days, the car started life as a 650S and was air-freighted from UK to New Zealand and back, with the initial instructions being for the car to be “stretched in all directions” to give it a much more aggressive stance.
