Best-selling VW Tiguan 162TSI R-Line now with $2000 cashback in Australia

In the market for a mid-size SUV? Volkswagen Australia is offering a special cashback deal for its Tiguan 162TSI R-Line until the end of the financial year, as it prepares for the all-new generation due to arrive in around 12 months.

The deal is, receive $2000 factory cashback for every purchase of the Tiguan 162TSI R-Line signed before June 30 this year. This is for the five-seat variant only, equipped with the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder producing 162kW and 350Nm.

Volkswagen says this is the single best-selling variant on offer, which makes sense considering it presents a good blend of performance (we’ve timed 0-100 in 6.49s – see video below), luxury, efficiency, and practicality. It has made up 50 per cent of overall Tiguan sales. VW Australia’s director of passenger cars, Michal Szaniecki, said:

“This one of the few instances in the current Tiguan five seater’s life cycle that we have had sufficient supply of the top variant, which, when available has of itself made up 50 per cent of Tiguan sales.”

Prices for this variant start from $60,590, minus $2000. It remains as a fairly expensive model in the mid-size SUV class, but in terms of performance and luxury, it does showcase superior elements in various areas compared with some rivals. The Tiguan Allspace 162TSI R-Line 7-seater is priced from $60,590 (prices exclude on-road costs).

As for the next-gen model, it was unveiled in September last year boasting a fresh exterior design, more in-car technology, and optimised interior space thanks to a switch to the MQB Evo platform. It’s about 30mm longer overall, with boot space up by 37 litres to 652L.

So far there has been no official mention of a new Tiguan R performance model, but it is expected to come later down the track. The new model has launched overseas but, as mentioned, isn’t set for Australia for another year. VW said: “The new, third generation Tiguan is due for this market in some 12 months.”
