It’s official, there is a Porsche 911 hybrid in the works. We’ve already seen prototypes out and about, including on the Nurburgring wearing special ‘EV’ warning stickers. But now Porsche has confirmed the new powertrain will debut later this month.
The 2025 Porsche 911 hybrid will be the first road-going hybrid 911 ever. It has just finished off an extensive development programme, Porsche says, and now it’s ready for series production and showroom entry. It is unclear at this point but it’s expected hybrid power will be available on select variants only; not all models.
Porsche says it has conducted more than 5 million kilometres in testing with the new model, including testing in freezing conditions in the very north, to extreme heat in Dubai. Plenty of testing was also done in day-to-date traffic conditions in urban settings.
No specifications or finer details have been released at this point, unfortunately, but Porsche has confirmed the new model is 8.7 seconds quicker around the Nurburgring than its equivalent predecessor. Brand ambassador Jorg Bergmeister set a lap time of 7:16.934 during testing. He said:
“The new 911 has become considerably faster on the track. We have more grip, significantly more power, and the spontaneous response of the performance hybrid is a great advantage.”
The company promises a more dynamic drive experience with the hybrid technology, however, the additional components and battery are expected to add a decent amount of weight to the legendary sports car.
According to reports, the battery is set to be around 2kWh in capacity and might only add around 30kg to the kerb weight. It’s understood Rimac, partly owned by Porsche, may have assisted in its development. Frank Moser, vice president for the 911 and 718 model lines, said:
“For the first time in our icon’s 61-year history, we are installing a hybrid drive system in a roadgoing 911. This innovative performance hybrid makes the 911 even more dynamic. We left nothing to chance during development and tested the new 911 under all sorts of conditions all over the world.”
A full unveiling with specs is scheduled for May 28, at 11pm AEST. Stay tuned for more details. And check out our previous spy video below taken trackside at Nurburgring for a preview of its performance and sound.
