Volkswagen ID.7 officially revealed, boasts up to 700km range

Another day, another new electric vehicle hits the scene. That’s how it seems lately. But some good stuff is coming through, which is great for market variety. Volkswagen has just unveiled its new ID.7 fully electric sedan for the “upper mid-size” class. And on first glance, it does deserve a closer look.

The ID.7 is the next in a long line of all-new fully electric models under the ‘ID’ sub-brand from VW. It features some advanced and segment-trumping systems, along with a 77kWh (82kWh gross) or up to 86kWh (91kWh gross) battery, and charging capacities up to around 200kW.

Volkswagen hasn’t provided a detailed rundown on the full range, which of course is dependent on market regions, but it does say the ID.7 will offer a range of up to 700km (WLTP). Specific outputs for the lineup are also yet to be confirmed, but the company does say it comes with a 210kW motor that is the most powerful electric drive unit of any ID model so far.

Measuring “almost” five metres in length, Volkswagen says the ID.7 was designed on aerodynamic principles. In fact, the drag coefficient value is “about 0.23” depending on the options. That is an excellent value for a production car.

The new model also showcases short front and rear overhangs which are always favoured because they help provide dynamic and precise handling, but also assist with maximising interior space.

Turning to the interior, there’s a mega 15-inch infotainment screen on the dash, as well as augmented reality head-up display technology, and a special backlit touch slider and new climate control operating concept within the infotainment screen.

Volkswagen is planning to launch 10 new models by 2026, all electric, with this year bringing in the ID.3, ID. Buzz, and this ID.7. A compact SUV and ID.2all are scheduled for 2026. Production of the ID.7 will take place at Volkswagen’s Emden plant in Germany, except Chinese models will be made in China. Imelda Labbe, member of the board of management at VW, is quoted in an official statement, saying:

“The ID.7 is an extremely important model for the Volkswagen brand in Europe, China and North America. The ID.7 offers an attractive package that will excite both existing and new Volkswagen customers all over the world. In this Volkswagen, we are offering premium technologies that impress through their exclusivity, premium comfort and high degree of everyday usability.”

Volkswagen Australia has confirmed it will be launching the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.Buzz and ID.Buzz Cargo by the end of 2025. Unfortunately, there’s been no confirmation regarding this new ID.7 yet.

I like to think that I'm a car fanatic, but more of a driving fanatic. There's nothing better than getting out onto the open road, almost regardless of the car, and enjoying dancing with the controls and gathering up the moving scenery. If I'm not driving I'm either at the gym or sinking a few beers with friends.
