2024 Range Rover Sport SV debut confirmed for May 31, sounds meaty (video)

Range Rover is getting ready to unveil its all-new 2024 Range Rover Sport SV performance model next month, and has sent out a teaser video to get the juices flowing.

This will be an interesting one for a number of reasons. Firstly, it will be based on Land Rover’s new MLA-Flex platform incorporating mixed-metal construction for lightness, and a claimed 35 per cent increase in torsional stiffness, according to a recent Autocar report.

Atop the platform the new model will also showcase Land Rover’s latest design philosophy, incorporating smoother panel contours, a full-width taillight cluster at the back, and slimmer headlights up front.

As for the high-performance SV variant, it is set to switch to a BMW-sourced 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8, codenamed the N63. Power is expected to surpass the outgoing model’s 423kW output, from the now-superseded  5.0-litre supercharged V8.

In the big daddy Range Rover for the new generation, the ‘P530’ variant uses the same 4.4-litre BMW unit as suggested here, with 390kW and 750Nm. These are the same outputs that BMW applies in vehicles such as the BMW M850i, where this engine is also used.

Now for the SV, BMW doesn’t really offer anything above the 390kW mark. However, BMW M does produce its own version of the N63 unit, codenamed S63, producing up to 460kW in the case of the M5 Competition and X5 M Competition. We’re not sure if the BMW-Land Rover deal includes access to BMW M division, keeping in mind the 390kW V8 is a product of BMW itself (under the M Performance sub-brand, to be more specific).

BMW introduced an update for the X5 and X6 M Competition earlier this year which brought in mild-hybrid technology for the V8. It adds a 9kW/200Nm starter-generator, although peak power remains at 460kW.

As with the outgoing Range Rover Sport SVR (new model to drop the ‘R’ from the name), Range Rover is likely to equip the SV with special sports suspension, big brakes, a custom aero kit for the body, and a tweaked interior with exclusive seats. The below teaser video also suggests some aggressive bonnet vents.

Jaguar Land Rover recently announced a few changes within its business, including a 15-million-pound investment into new technologies. One of the take-aways from the major announcement was a shift in the lineup sequence. Going forward, there will be four main model lines; Jaguar, Discovery, Defender, and Range Rover. The SV will come in as one of the flagship products within Range Rover.

Speaking briefly about the new SV in a statement, Range Rover said the new model will introduce a number of “world-first, sector-first and Range Rover-first technologies” when it arrives, while also coming in as the “fastest, most dynamic and technologically advanced” Range Rover Sport it has ever made.

That’s a lot to live up to, so we’re eagerly looking forward to all the details. It’ll be unveiled on May 31. Check out the teaser video below for a taste – it includes snippets of the growling exhaust note.

I like to think that I'm a car fanatic, but more of a driving fanatic. There's nothing better than getting out onto the open road, almost regardless of the car, and enjoying dancing with the controls and gathering up the moving scenery. If I'm not driving I'm either at the gym or sinking a few beers with friends.
