Classic Land Rover Defender V8 ‘Works Bespoke’ available in Australia

Land Rover has announced that Australian customers can now commission a fully restored and customised classic Defender, complete with a naturally aspirated 5.0-litre V8 engine producing 298kW.

Known as the Defender Classic V8 Works Bespoke, the program allows customers to specify a classic Defender according to their individual preferences, with extensive choices covering exterior styling, interior materials and accessories.

Unlike the modern Defender, these vehicles are based on original Land Rover Defenders manufactured between 2012 and 2016, which are sourced and comprehensively rebuilt by the company’s specialist restoration division.

Three body styles are initially available, including the short-wheelbase Defender 90 wagon, 90 Soft Top, and 110 wagon, with additional configurations expected to follow.

Under the bonnet is Land Rover’s 5.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol V8, developing 298kW and 515Nm, paired with an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission. Power is distributed through a permanent four-wheel-drive system incorporating a two-speed transfer case, heavy-duty front and rear differentials and a torque-biasing centre differential.

Despite the classic bodywork, performance is relatively impressive. Land Rover estimates 0-100km/h acceleration in 5.9 seconds for the Defender 90, increasing to 6.1 seconds for the larger 110. Top speed is limited to 170km/h.

The restoration process also includes upgraded suspension, with Eibach coil springs and anti-roll bars, Bilstein dampers – retaining the live axle front and rear – and four-piston Alcon brakes featuring 335mm front and 300mm rear discs.

Customers can choose from various exterior colours, including heritage-inspired finishes or completely bespoke paintwork, along with different grille designs, wheels and exterior accessories.

Inside, the familiar Defender dashboard and upright driving position remain, although the cabin receives extensive leather upholstery and additional comfort features. Modern conveniences include a 4.8-inch touch-screen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, satellite navigation and digital radio. A larger 9.0-inch infotainment system is also available, along with optional Recaro seats and a reversing camera.

For customers interested in off-road touring, an Explorer Pack can add camping equipment, including a rear cabin conversion and roof-mounted tent.

To demonstrate the customisation possibilities, Land Rover is also offering a completed Defender 90 Soft Top finished in Sunset Gold, available for immediate purchase.

Australian customers can begin the commissioning process through the Defender Classic online configurator, with specialist support provided by the company’s restoration teams in the UK and Germany.

Given the extensive restoration work and individual specifications, pricing is considerably higher than a conventional Defender. Land Rover says the Defender Classic V8 Works Bespoke is priced from £209,000 (about AU$398,900).
