One of the most famous names in Australian performance-car history, HDT, is planning some kind of comeback, with an announcement to be made at the 2026 Bathurst 1000 in a couple of weeks.
HDT will reveal details of its next chapter at the 2026 Repco Bathurst 1000, as part of the Lap 162: The Great Race Cool Down event held after the race weekend.
Exactly what HDT is planning remains under wraps, although the company says it will “provide a first look at the ambitious new direction for HDT” and a “renewed presence in Bathurst”.
That leaves plenty of unanswered questions, particularly given the disappearance of locally-manufactured Holden vehicles that formed the basis of HDT’s best-known road cars. After all, HDT was the Holden Dealer Team established in 1969, before Peter Brock took over in 1980 and created HDT Special Vehicles.
The operation subsequently produced a series of performance-focused Commodores alongside its racing activities, many of which are now highly collectable.
HDT will lean into that heritage for the Bathurst announcement, with a selection of significant race and road cars scheduled to appear, including a HDT VL SL Commodore prototype used during development of the VL Director and Aero.
Former HDT drivers and other figures from Australian motorsport will also take part in a Q&A, while the brand has signed on as a major sponsor of the Lap 162 event.
For now, HDT isn’t saying what vehicles it will be involved with going forward, if any. More details will be announced at Mount Panorama in a couple of weeks.
