Mitsubishi has officially confirmed the name of its all-new large SUV will bring back the Pajero badge for 2027. It’ll be revealed later this year.
The reborn large SUV marks the first international return of the Pajero (also called Montero overseas) since production for some markets ended in 2021, reviving a badge with a long history in off-road competition and adventure-focused four-wheel driving.
Originally launched in 1982, the Pajero became a cornerstone model for Mitsubishi, blending genuine off-road capability with passenger-car comfort at a time when recreational four-wheel drives were still relatively niche.

Over four generations, the model achieved global sales exceeding 3.25 million units across more than 170 markets, while also helping establish Mitsubishi’s reputation in the SUV segment. Mitsubishi says the all-new model will continue that spirit, positioning it as a flagship SUV for the brand’s future global lineup.
The 2027 Pajero is being developed using the ladder-frame platform from the latest Triton ute, although Mitsubishi says the SUV receives its own dedicated suspension and interior layout. That likely means it’ll be more like the Pajero Sport rather than a larger, dedicated model line like historic Pajero generations.
According to the company, the aim is to combine strong off-road ability with a more refined and comfortable driving experience on sealed roads.
While detailed specifications remain under wraps for now, Mitsubishi describes the incoming Pajero as a “cross-country SUV” designed to reflect the brand’s long-standing focus on durability, exploration and all-terrain performance.
The return of the Pajero name also continues Mitsubishi’s renewed focus on body-on-frame SUVs and utilities, following the arrival of the latest Triton and the recently announced Australian-developed Triton Raider.
More information on the new-generation Pajero is expected closer to its official unveiling later this year.
