Chery Tiggo X7 revealed, previews new rugged off-road variant

Chery has unveiled the new Tiggo X7 at a preview event in China, introducing a more adventure-focused SUV with increased ground clearance, all-wheel drive capability and a selection of hybrid powertrains.

The new model is the first in Chery’s Tiggo X series, designed to complement the regular Tiggo 7 with a more rugged appearance and additional off-road driving features.

Measuring 4636mm long, 1970mm wide and 1788mm tall, with a 2700mm wheelbase, the X7 is slightly larger than the regular Tiggo 7, particularly in width and height.

It features a distinctive boxy design, with squared wheel arches, an upright front grille, prominent roof rails and slim LED headlights. Despite its off-road-inspired appearance, the X7 (not related to the BMW X7) uses a conventional monocoque platform rather than a separate ladder-frame chassis.

One of the main highlights is more than 200mm of ground clearance, along with a claimed 700mm maximum wading depth. Chery has also developed a driving mode system with three on-road settings and six off-road modes, covering snow, mud, sand, mountain, rock and water crossings.

Other equipment includes an off-road crawl control function and a 540-degree camera system, providing a view around the vehicle and a simulated view underneath to assist when negotiating obstacles.

The Tiggo X7 is expected to be offered with both conventional hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains, with front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations, depending on the variant and market region.

International reports indicate a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine producing around 115kW and 220Nm will form part of the powertrain lineup, although full hybrid system outputs, battery capacities and driving range figures are yet to be detailed. A maximum braked towing capacity of 1500kg has also been reported for the new model.

Inside, the X7 incorporates a comfort management system designed to regulate six aspects of the cabin environment, including temperature, humidity, air quality, cleanliness, noise and personalisation.

The second row features a one-touch folding mechanism, while the cabin includes physical controls and a range of storage solutions intended for family travel and outdoor activities.

The Tiggo X7 will sit alongside the next-generation Tiggo 7, which was also revealed during the event in China. While the regular model focuses more on urban driving and everyday family comfort, the X7 offers a more adventurous alternative.

Australian availability has not been confirmed, although the Tiggo X7 is understood to be among the international models being considered for the local market.

If introduced, it could provide Chery with a rival to other rugged-styled family SUVs, particularly as demand grows for vehicles combining conventional SUV practicality with additional rough-road capability.
