Ford will bring the new Bronco Basecamp to Australia in the second half of 2027, introducing the Bronco name locally with an unusual range-extender hybrid powertrain and a strong focus on camping and outdoor use.
Unlike the traditional body-on-frame Bronco sold in North America (based on the Australian-developed T6 platform), the Basecamp uses a monocoque platform developed in part with Chinese carmaker JMC, and combines electric propulsion with a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine acting purely as a generator.
A usable 49kWh battery supplies a dual-motor electric drive system, while the petrol engine extends the vehicle’s range rather than directly driving the wheels. Ford estimates a combined driving range of between 800 and 900km, although detailed power and performance figures have not yet been announced for Australia.
The Basecamp, also called the Bronco New Energy in China, incorporates a number of features normally left to the aftermarket.
Outer Banks versions will be available with an electrically operated pop-up roof, increasing headroom and ventilation when parked. The cabin can also be converted into a sleeping area when paired with an optional full-length inflatable mattress.
A 7.5-litre heated and cooled centre-console storage compartment is standard on the Outer Banks, while a fold-down Wild Kitchen is integrated into the rear swing gate for preparing food and organising camping equipment.
Up to 6.6kW of Pro Power Onboard is available, allowing the vehicle’s battery to run equipment such as induction cooktops, coffee machines, lighting, laptops and other electrical gear while parked.
The new model represents the first electrified member of the Bronco family, although its construction and range-extender powertrain make it a considerably different proposition from the traditional Bronco 4WD.
Ford hasn’t yet detailed the Basecamp’s off-road hardware, electric-only driving range, power outputs or charging capabilities for Australia. In China, the system produces around 310kW.
Local pricing and the complete variant lineup will also be announced closer to launch. The Ford Bronco Basecamp is scheduled to arrive in Australia and New Zealand during the second half of 2027.
