Jaecoo is getting ready to launch its new J5 SHS-H hybrid in Australia, and has announced some specifications and highlights ahead of its arrival.
The Jaecoo J5 SHS-H hybrid features Chery’s latest Super Hybrid System technology, pairing a 1.5-litre turbo four-cylinder engine with an electric motor, combining to produce an impressive 165kW/295Nm (for its class).
However, the interesting part is this engine offers an incredible 44.5 per cent thermal efficiency. That’s higher than any rival in this class. There’s also an advanced single-speed hybrid gearbox, sending power to the front wheels.

Jaecoo claims the new J5 hybrid is able to offer a combined range of 980km, and an average fuel consumption of 5.3L/100km. Although the range is good, the fuel economy average is above many of its hybrid rivals, including the Toyota Corolla Cross FWD which is stamped at 4.2L/100km.
The SHS-H system is a series hybrid setup and not a plug-in hybrid like some of Chery’s other ‘SHS’ labelled systems. That means you don’t have the ability to plug it in and charge up, and there is no specific electric-only range.
Even so, it will come in as one of the most powerful small hybrid SUVs in its segment. It’ll also boast a number of standard features, including a panoramic sunroof, 13.2-inch touch-screen, and a 480L boot. Full local specs are yet to be confirmed.

The Jaecoo J5 SHS-H hybrid will arrive in Australia later this year, alongside the petrol-only version which is also coming soon. These will round out the J5 range, bolstering the existing J5 EV, which is quite popular in its class.
According to VFACTS new vehicle registration figures for April, 2026, Jaecoo has delivered 1845 examples of the J5 (EV) so far this year, placing it in 10th position in a very busy segment.
