Updated BYD Shark 6 gets 2.0L engine, 3500kg towing upgrade

BYD is expanding its Shark 6 ute lineup in Australia for 2026, with the introduction of two new variants including a Performance 2.0L and a double-cab-chassis offering. These join the existing regular model.

Headlining the update is the arrival of the Shark 6 Dynamic cab-chassis, aimed squarely at trade and fleet customers. The cab-chassis has the option of a heavy-duty alloy tray developed in partnership with Ironman 4×4. With multiple tie-down points and integrated storage, it’s clearly targeted at those looking for a workhorse.

At the other end of the range, the Shark 6 Performance steps things up with increased outputs and greater towing capability. It introduces a larger 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine for the plug-in hybrid system, lifting total outputs to 350kW and 700Nm, while also raising braked towing capacity to 3500kg.

The existing 1.5-litre setup continues in the Dynamic and Premium grades, producing 321kW and 650Nm. A 29.5kWh battery continues, with 0-100km/h claimed in 5.7 seconds for the two entry models and 5.5 seconds for the new Performance grade with the 2.0L engine.

A trio of driving modes manages how the hybrid system operates, switching between electric-only, generator-based hybrid and combined petrol-electric drive depending on the conditions.

The Performance variant also introduces a new low-speed off-road Crawl Mode setting aimed at more challenging terrain – maybe now it will be able to climb our usual hill climb, after failing in current form? BYD says the new mode will be available for existing Shark 6 owners via an over-the-air update soon.

Across the board, the Shark 6 continues to use independent suspension at both ends, with BYD placing an emphasis on balancing ride comfort with load-carrying ability. Vehicle-to-load functionality is also included, allowing the ute to power tools or equipment directly from its onboard battery.

Inside, all models feature a large touch-screen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity, alongside a digital instrument display and a full suite of active safety systems. The range carries a five-star ANCAP safety rating.

The new models go on sale from the following prices (excluding on-road costs):

2026 BYD Shark 6 Dynamic 1.5T PHEV cab-chassis: $55,900
2026 BYD Shark 6 Dynamic 1.5T PHEV dual-cab: $57,900
2026 BYD Shark 6 Performance 2.0T PHEV dual-cab: $62,900
