2026 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV lands in Australia; 221kW, more range

The new Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is finally available in showrooms for 2026, bringing in more power, retuned ride and handling, and increased electric range for the popular mid-size SUV.

Four variants of the new PHEV are on sale, from the ES, Aspire, Exceed and Exceed Tourer (no more GSR). These are available in five- or seven-seat configuration, depending on the variant.

Power comes from a revised plug-in hybrid system incorporating a 2.4-litre petrol four-cylinder, which can directly power the front wheels or act as a generator for the electric drive system, with a combined output of 221kW (up from 185kW in the outgoing model).

With the new 22.7kWh battery charged to full capacity, the Outlander PHEV offers an electric driving range of 86km on the WLTP cycle or 103km on the NEDC cycle. Although that is an increase over the previous 84km range (NEDC), it is lower than some newcomer SUVs in this segment, such as the BYD Sealion 6 (128km).

However, where the Outlander stands out is with local tuning and refined suspension. The new model, like the updated petrol range, features recalibrated front and rear dampers, a smaller front sway bar, electric power steering revisions, and some new Bridgestone tyres.

These changes, along with a new steel bonnet and front guards, help to improve driving refinement and smoothness, as well as provide a quieter cabin experience. Mitsubishi says these updates have been “tried and tested” in Australia.

Various revisions have also been made to the exterior styling, with updated front and rear bumper bars, new LED taillights in a tinted theme, along with new alloy wheels. A Moonstone Grey colour option has been added to the Aspire and Exceed as well.

Inside, all models (at minimum) come with a 12.3-inch touch-screen interface with an eight-speaker Yamaha sound system (12 speakers in Exceed Tourer), wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a surround-view camera, and improvements to the blind-spot and lane-departure warning systems.

The new model is on sale and available in showrooms now, with prices starting from the following (excluding on-road costs). Entry prices have jumped around $1700 over the previous ES model.

2026 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV ES (5 seat): $58,990

2026 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Aspire (7 seat): $66,790
2026 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Exceed (5 seat): $71,640
