Ford Australia is bolstering its popular Transit Custom van range with the introduction of a new all-wheel drive (AWD) variant called the Transit Custom Trail. Set to arrive later this year, the Trail builds on the success of the existing lineup and is aimed at buyers needing more go-anywhere ability without compromising the practicality and space.
Offered exclusively in long-wheelbase (LWB) form, the Transit Custom Trail introduces a sportier and somewhat rugged design, with a unique front grille, skid plates, matt black 16-inch twin-spoke alloy wheels, and black cladding along the sides and wheel arches. Silver sill panels and yellow decals add further distinction, while LED headlights and daytime running lights complete the look.
Inside, the Trail gains artificial leather upholstery with bespoke Trail branding on the driver’s seat and yellow contrast stitching across all seats. A dual passenger seat is standard, with an optional single passenger seat available for those who prefer extra cabin flexibility.
Frozen White is the standard paint finish, while four prestige colours will be available at extra cost. Additional options include a rear lift gate and dual side doors to suit different operational needs.
As for the hardware, the four-wheel drive system is permanently active and manages power between the axles, offering improved grip on slippery and loose surfaces. It’s designed to anticipate loss of traction and shift torque rearward before slip occurs.
The Trail remains consistent with the rest of the diesel-powered Transit Custom range in terms of engine specs, which means you get a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder producing 125kW and 390Nm. This is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. While the powertrain is unchanged, the shift to AWD is a major departure from the standard front-wheel drive layout found in other variants.
Ford says the Trail builds on the Transit Custom Trend’s safety credentials, and as such comes with the full suite of active safety features that helped it earn ANCAP’s highest Platinum safety rating in 2024.
First examples of the MY25.75 Transit Custom Trail are expected to hit local showrooms during Q4, 2025, with more detailed specifications to be released closer to launch. Prices start from $61,990 (excluding on-roads).
