BMW Australia is leading the premium market in terms of new vehicle sales in Australia, with March results easily overshadowing its main rivals in the form of Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and Lexus.
According to VFACTS new vehicle registration figures, BMW Australia delivered 2456 vehicles in March. That’s more than Mercedes-Benz (2031 units), Audi (1234), and Lexus (1295).
However, sales are down 3.7 per cent so far this year. Across the first three months, quarter one saw 5628 deliveries from the Bavarian brand. Although it is down slightly on the same period last year, that figure is higher than the main rivals.
Mercedes-Benz delivered 5131 vehicles (up 31.1 per cent) in the first quarter in Australia, while Lexus sold 3318 units (up 11 per cent), and Audi shifted 3392 units (down 3.6 per cent).
The most popular model for BMW so far this year has been the X1, making up 1089 units of that total, followed by the X3 with 832 units, and then the X5 making up 710 units. Speaking about the results, BMW Australia CEO, Wolfgang Buechel, said:
“Our strategy is built on long-term investment – not just in products and sales, but in the Australian market itself. BMW is here for the long haul, and we are more engaged than ever in investing in our brand, people and products.”
BMW says one of the biggest contributors to the success has been from its recent introduction of electrified models, with EVs making up 26 per cent of its sales in the first quarter. That’s a 4.1 per cent increase on the same period last year. BMW offers 16 fully electric variants now, which is more than any other car brand.
The new iX3 will go in to production at BMW’s Debrecen plant in Hungary in late in 2025. It’s expected to be quite a popular model given it sits in the demanding mid-size SUV class, but additionally, it will be the first model based on BMW’s Neue Klasse platform. Prototype testing is currently underway in various parts of the world.
