Examples of the new 2024 Ford Mustang (S650) have landed in Australia, including the tempting Dark Horse variant. The new model was scheduled to arrive last year but has been facing some delays.
We spotted a transport truck in Sydney this week, hauling what looks to be the full range of S650 Mustangs, likely en route to a showroom or potentially to become part of the official press and initial demonstrator fleet.
If you have a close look you’ll see a standard Mustang at the back on the top in Race Red, a Dark Matter Grey GT at the bottom, and then a Blue Ember Dark Horse in front, with another GT up the top in Vapour Blue.
Three variants are on sale in Australia, including the base EcoBoost featuring a 2.3-litre turbo four-cylinder engine producing 232kW and 475Nm, matched to a 10-speed automatic only. The GT continues with a 5.0-litre V8, now producing 347kW and 550Nm, available in six-speed manual and 10-speed auto form.
At the top of the range is the new Dark Horse, which comes with a slightly tweaked 5.0-litre V8 that develops 349kW and 548Nm. It’s available in manual and auto as well, but only as a Fastback coupe – the GT continues to be offered in convertible form and only with the automatic.
Going for the Dark Horse adds, aside from a bump in power, unique 19-inch alloy wheels with 255/40 front and 275/40 rear tyres – the GT wears the same size tyres but the rear rims are 9.5 inches wide, with 10 inches on the back of the Dark Horse. It also gets a bespoke body trimmings and spoilers, blue-painted Brembo brakes, forged conrods, MagneRide dampers with firmer front springs, and a Torsen limited-slip differential.
Inside welcomes a fresh 13.2-inch touch-screen running Ford’s SYNC 4 system, connected to a 12-speaker B&O sound system. A 12.4-inch digital screen sits in the gauge cluster for the driver. On-board gadgets like acceleration timers and g-force gauges continue, as well as the Line Lock burnout function.
