Toyota Australia has announced some preliminary details of the 2025 GR86 sports coupe, ahead of its local arrival later this year. It brings in a new Limited Edition variant with mechanical upgrades.
The styling is pretty much carried over from before, with a sleek low-profile theme divided up into two trim lines; the GT and GTS. No changes are made to the 2.4-litre naturally aspirated flat-four engine, so it continues to produce a healthy 174kW and 250Nm. Both a six-speed manual and auto carry over as well.
Although the engine isn’t changed, Toyota has made some revisions to the dampers to help boost dynamic performance and to provide a “better sense of contact” with the road, Toyota says. The electric power steering system has also been revised for more engagement and response, with more feel.
For the manual, some tweaks have been made to the throttle control system to enhance response, supporting more sporty driving. Meanwhile the auto comes in for some light tuning as well, so downshifts can be made within a wider rev range.
A special Limited Edition will be available with the updated fleet, bringing in the Dynamic Performance Pack with ZF Sachs dampers and Brembo brakes with four-piston front calipers (up from two in the GTS), while the LE adds bespoke 18-inch alloy wheels in bronze and the body is coated in a special Forest Shadow green. Speaking about the new model, Toyota Australia’s vice president of sales, Sean Hanley, said:
“This fine tuning raises the bar even further with improved dynamic performance for those who wish to truly push the limits in track days and motorsport activities. For those looking for an even more exclusive GR86, the new Limited Edition is a standout with its exclusive exterior colour, wheels and interior trim and high-performance suspension and brake package.”
The interior introduces a unique tan and Ultrasuede package with tan highlights. Just 86 examples of the Limited Edition will be available in Australia. More details and prices will be announced later in the year, ahead of the on-sale date in “late 2024”.
