GWM Tank 500, Chery Tiggo 8 score 5-star ANCAP safety rating (video)

The GWM Tank 500, a bigger brother to the Tank 300, has just been awarded the full five-star safety rating by ANCAP, under its latest 2023-2025 protocols.

GWM – Great Wall Motors – based in China, is building momentum with its rugged SUV rollout, and it’s great to see the latest model, the Tank 500, has passed the industry benchmark under the latest safety testing regime.

Across the usual four areas of scoring, the Tank 500 was given 85 per cent for its adult occupant protection levels, 93 per cent for child occupant protection, and 81 per cent for vulnerable road user protection (pedestrian).

For the on-board active safety assist technologies, ANCAP gave it 84 per cent. However, more and more features are being added to this section, and some technologies, such as a driver monitoring camera, are mandatory before a five-star score can considered.

But, such technology is not comprehensively tested, but rather just a tick-box if the vehicle has it or not. This is an area we’ll have to watch in future, as some vehicles are being given such technologies without much calibration.

Either way, receiving a five-star rating is important for the new model, especially for the emerging brand which is still in its infancy in Australia, relative to other brands.

So far this year, GWM has delivered 13,531 vehicles to new customers. That’s 30 per cent up on the same four-month period in 2023. It is currently in front of Honda (5874 sales), LDV (5723), and VW (11,750).

In related ANCAP news, the new Chery Tiggo 8 Pro Max also received the full five-star rating. It scored 88 per cent, 87 per cent, 79 per cent, and 86 per cent, respective to the order of the scores mentioned above.

ANCAP points out that both of these vehicles, despite offering three rows of seats, do not feature child seat anchor points in the third row. As a result, it says these vehicles are not suitable for carrying young children in the third row. Click play below to see how the Tank 500 performed.
