An example of the controversial Tesla Cybertruck pickup ute has been spotted in Sydney, Australia, chilling between a Model 3 and a Model Y.
Spotted by Kevin Ngo and shared on the Tesla Owners Australia Facebook page,Β the left-hand drive vehicle is seen wearing temporary use Queensland number plates. Driving throughout Sydney, it drew a crowd wherever it went β a surreal sight for passersby.
Tesla previously teased a half-open shipping container, alluding to the fact the Cybertruck was inside. What it is doing here is not completely clear, apparently to drum up excitement for a new showroom opening up, but it could be Down Under to gauge local interest as well, despite no current plans to build the vehicle in right-hand drive configuration.
Other limitations include the ‘exoskeleton’ structure potentially falling foul of pedestrian safety regulations, which could potentially require significant re-engineering to pass.
More perplexingly, Tesla recently decided to stop production of right-hand-drive versions of the Model S and Model X, withdrawing them from the Australian market last year.
The Cybertruck is available in three configurations overseas, with a single motor, rear-wheel drive version with 400km range, a dual-motor AWD with 450kW, and the 630kW tri-motor ‘Cyberbeast’ capable of 0-60mph (97km/h) in 2.6 seconds (with rollout).
It’s noteworthy that Tesla apparently still holds deposits from Australian customers hoping to secure a Cybertruck, so watch this space.
