Chery OMODA 5 GT debuts in Australia, priced from $41,490

Chery has taken the wraps off the OMODA 5 GT in Australia, a much-improved version of the OMODA 5 which the Chinese brand hopes will boost interest in the small crossover range.

Joining the 108kW/210Nm OMODA 5 BX and EX models, the GT swaps out the CVT transmission for a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT), with the optional addition of all-wheel drive (AWD).

Power comes from a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, it develops a less paltry 137kW and 275Nm than the standard 1.5 turbo’s 108kW/210Nm. However, it now requires a minimum 95 RON fuel to achieve its combined 6.8L/100km fuel consumption average – a 0.1L/100km improvement on the two entry level models.

The GT AWD consumes 7.4L/100km, and weighs 1535kg versus 1430kg for the front-drive GT, and 1393kg for the EX.

Underneath, the torsion beam rear suspension layout of the EX and BX are switched out for a double-wishbone setup, which should result in better road manners in a variety of conditions. Interestingly, this has not resulted in any impost to boot space, still at 360L/1075L

Following strong criticism about the operation of Chery’s Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), the company says engineers have been flown in from China and spent the last ten months tweaking the software to behave better on Australian roads. Apparently these changes “should” be downloadable for existing OMODA 5 customers when they pop in for a service.

Other running changes to the interior materials and presentation were noticeable at this launch event, too, with slightly more premium feeling overall.

Prices start from $38,990 drive-away for the entry, two-wheel drive model and from $41,490 drive-away for the GT AWD.

As with other Chery models, the OMODA 5 GT is covered by a 7-year/unlimited kilometre warranty with roadside assistance. It achieved a five-star ANCAP crash test result in 2023.
