2024 Toyota C-HR now on sale in Australia, GR Sport gets 146kW hybrid

Toyota Australia is introducing the second-generation 2024 C-HR small SUV, bringing in a more powerful hybrid package and an all-new design inside and out.

The C-HR has been a reasonably successful model line, even for Toyota standards, however, it does compete in the same class as the Corolla Cross. That, too, is quite a successful model that is well-received by customers.

Where the C-HR differs is through a sportier exterior design featuring a coupe-like rear end. And now, the new model steps up to the same power output as the Corolla Cross, which levels the playing field and could make things even more complex for deciding buyers.

Three variant levels are being presented in Australia, spanning from the GXL, Koba, to the GR Sport. Interestingly, the higher-output engine is being reserved for the GR Sport variant, which does make sense.

The entry two feature a 1.8-litre four-cylinder hybrid producing 103kW, offering an official fuel consumption average of just 4.0L/100km. That’s up from 90kW in the outgoing 1.8 hybrid and down from 4.3L/100km. This engine is paired with front-wheel drive and a CVT auto transmission.

At the top, the GR Sport gets the same 2.0-litre hybrid from the Corolla Cross, including an E-Four all-wheel drive system. It produces a healthy 146kW and offers an official fuel consumption average of 4.1L/100km. You may have noticed the fuel economy figure is almost identical to the 1.8 FWD system, despite featuring AWD.

Inside, all models come with a 12.3-inch touch-screen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, digital radio, sat-nav, and, at minimum, a six-speaker sound system and 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster screen. The Koba adds a 12.3-inch gauge cluster, nine-speaker JBL audio, wireless phone charger, and rear USB-C port.

The GR Sport goes for a sporty aesthetic, coming equipped with GR Sport scuff plates, leather and suede-like upholstery, GR steering wheel, and a set of 19-inch alloy wheels. There’s also a sporty bodykit.

All variants come with a 12-month complementary subscription to Toyota Connected Services, and all are covered by Toyota’s five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, with capped-price servicing for the first five years or 75,000km.

The new model is on sale now from the following prices (excluding on-road costs):

2024 Toyota C-HR GXL 1.8 hybrid FWD: $42,990
2024 Toyota C-HR Koba 1.8 hybrid FWD: $49,990
2024 Toyota C-HR GR Sport 2.0 hybrid AWD: $54,990
