In the cutthroat world of hot hatches, the Hyundai i20 N bursted onto the scene like a dynamo, injecting old-school thrills and mechanical know-how while perpetuating Hyundai N’s devotion to try and keep the segment alive.
However, a successor is unlikely to happen, at least in fire-breathing turbo form. This means this is either a very rare opportunity to grab one before it becomes extinct, or simply a time-machine for traditional driving enthusiasts.

2023 Hyundai i20 N: How much does it cost?
Let’s kick things off with the crucial details that often determine the success of a hot hatch; pricing. Hyundai, known for offering value-packed vehicles, has once again hit the sweet spot with the i20 N. Competing in a market where every dollar counts, one class above the likes of the Kia Picanto, the i20 N manages to strike a balance between affordability and hardcore performance.
The local lineup is refreshingly uncomplicated, with a single well-equipped trim level that caters to both enthusiasts and everyday drivers. Standard features include performance-oriented elements like sports suspension, big brakes, a turbo engine, and a slick manual gearbox. This simplicity not only streamlines the buying process but also ensures that every i20 N comes with the essentials to make it a genuine hot hatch.
Prices start from $34,990 for the standard setup, or if you want a black contrast roof just add another $1000 to that figure (excluding on-road costs). Either way, it’s a bargain considering its proper performance credentials and overall packaging.
2023 Hyundai i20 N: Interior & packaging
The cabin is a tasteful blend of sportiness and practicality, with a driver-centric layout that reinforces the car’s performance pedigree. The N-specific steering wheel is a tactile delight, providing a direct line of communication between the driver and the road.
Supportive and well-bolstered sports seats are a great long-distance companion, but they also ensure occupants are firmly planted during spirited driving. Although, the optional N Light seats from the i30 N would be a bonus, but they aren’t offered.
The use of quality materials throughout the interior imparts a basic feel yet provides a practical and durable environment for everyday use. Most of the door trims and dash are in black, with only a few variations in textures and patterns. It works and it is totally within expectations for this price range.
Despite its compact dimensions, the i20 N’s clever packaging ensures that cabin space is utilised efficiently, offering ample room for both front and rear passengers, for this segment. Headroom is good thanks to a relatively tall and upright cabin orientation, and you’ve got some centre console storage for added convenience.
The cargo area, though not cavernous, is adequate for a hatch of this size, making it a practical choice for daily use. It measures 310L. Fold the rear seats down, and the i20 N transforms into a surprisingly versatile cargo hauler, presenting 1123L. A space-saver spare wheel sits under the floor.
2023 Hyundai i20 N: Powertrain & handling
The beating heart of the i20 N is a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, based on the unit seen in the i30 N Line, Tucson, and the last Veloster. With 150kW and 275Nm on tap, the i20 N feels punchy and playful, with surprisingly strong mid-range thanks to peak torque coming in from 1750rpm and held until 4500rpm.
Reaching the 0-100km/h sprint takes a claimed 6.2 seconds. The quickest we’ve ever achieved, including on the old PD channel, is 6.67 seconds. We tested it again for this review and clocked a best result of 6.69 seconds. It does come standard with a launch control system but, as is usually the case with such systems, they rarely supply a quicker result in manual vehicles. In this case it achieved 7.45 seconds with launch control.
It’s a brisk time that should bring a smile to any enthusiast’s face. Power delivery is linear, and the engine’s willingness to rev adds to the overall sense of engagement. As to be expected, the top end is where it starts to run out of steam, somewhat, with the quarter mile passed in 14.81 seconds at 156.6km/h. We’ve seen similar timeframes crossed at higher trap speeds, at around the 160km/h mark or higher. Not that this is designed as a top-speed machine – simply an observation.
Purists will rejoice at the inclusion of a manual transmission. It’s a rarity in a market dominated by automatics. The six-speed here is a joy to use, with short and precise throws that enhance the driver’s connection to the car. The clutch is nicely-weighted, striking a good balance between ease of use in traffic and feedback during spirited driving.
Where the i20 N truly shines is in its handling prowess. The chassis tuning is a masterstroke, providing a perfect blend of agility and stability. The taut suspension setup allows the i20 N to devour corners with confidence while maintaining brilliant compliance with the tarmac, even over bumps. It is pretty firm if you’re comparing to a regular hatchback. But this is not one of those. This can hit the track and carve up credible lap times as well as run you to work.
The mechanical limited-slip differential ensures optimal power distribution, translating to tenacious grip and a planted feel through corners under full throttle. There is some gentle tug through the steering wheel if you’re really on it, and demand a lot from it, but nothing that actually detracts from the experience or performance.
You can choose from a number of driving modes and configurations, and select between various displays including an on-board lap timer, acceleration timer, and live telemetry. About the only thing we’d change with the adjustability is the exhaust modes. Although the exhaust gives off a sporty note, there are parts of the rev range where it sounds quite monotone. It lacks character compared with its bigger brother, the i30 N, in our opinion. But obviously this is down to personal tastes.
Fuel economy is very impressive for the level of performance it provides. The official average is 6.9L/100km and we saw as low as 6.2L during our week of testing. A real-world average of 6.5L is totally possible, including some spirited driving on the odd occasion.
Hyundai’s N division has left no stone unturned in ensuring the i20 N lives up to the N badge’s reputation for dynamic excellence. The drive modes, including a dedicated N mode and different exhaust modes, allow the driver to tailor the car’s behaviour, whether it’s for a relaxed cruise or an adrenaline-fuelled track day. In terms of driving fun and engagement, not many come close to this, especially for the asking price.
2023 Hyundai i20 N: Key attractions/reasons to buy

- Driving dynamics: Hyundai’s N division has worked its magic on the i20 so it is super-engaging, exciting and fun, but also extremely capable of forgiving. Not many vehicles on the market can provide all of these traits.
- Manual transmission: It’s that added layer of engagement that helps provide a traditional and wholesome driving experience.
- Features and practicality: Despite its performance focus, Hyundai hasn’t skimped on creature comforts or space. This could be used as a daily driver quite easily.
- Price: Very affordable in today’s market
2023 Hyundai i20 N: Key considerations before you buy
- Manual only: While the manual transmission is a boon for enthusiasts, some buyers might miss the convenience of an automatic option, especially in heavy traffic.
- Ride comfort: This is a hot hatch so you shouldn’t expect luxury-car comfort. Even so, the firm ride is something to consider if you’re going to be spending lots of time in the city or on poorly-maintained bitumen.

How does it rate against its rivals?
Final word
Hyundai’s N division has built up a strong reputation for its ability to combine proper track-ready performance with everyday usability. The i20 N is yet another demonstration of this. It is the car to buy in this class if you’re a serious driving enthusiast, or if you’re simply after the most fun available. It’s a real shame this will be the last of its kind.
