Fans had their first opportunity to see the new Ford Mustang Dark Horse T8-Spec in the metal at the 2026 Bathurst 1000 event over the weekend, as the special edition made its public debut.
The T8-Spec is a limited-edition variant of the Mustang based on the Dark Horse, incorporating tuning and enhancements in collaboration with Triple Eight Engineering. These enhancements range from aero and styling tweaks to more serious suspension and handling calibrations.

Firstly, the engine. It retains the same 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8 from the Dark Horse, producing 350kW and 550Nm. That’s up slightly from the regular Dark Horse’s 349kW/548Nm tune, however, this is likely down to a ratings conversion tolerance – there are no mechanical changes. We’ve timed 0-100km/h in a best of 4.96 seconds in the Dark Horse, so we’d anticipate a slightly quicker result in the T8 since it wears superior tyres. More on that below.
Unlike the regular Dark Horse, the T8 is only available with a Tremec six-speed manual transmission. This ensures pure driver engagement. Also helping with engagement is a heavily retuned suspension package incorporating MagneRide dampers.

With stiffer springs and stabiliser bars, and adjustable top mounts, the setup promises more responsive steering and better stability. However, the upgrade to 305/30R19 front and 315/30R19 rear Pirelli P Zero Trofeo RS tyres will provide big increases in grip. Seven-time Supercars champion and Triple Eight Engineering team boss, Jamie Whincup, said:
“At the end of the day, the tyre is the only thing that touches the ground. You can have the best car and the best driver, but if you’ve got the wrong tyres, it’s not going to be quick.
“It’s already a nicely balanced car. It not only handles well, but it gives great feedback to the driver, so they enjoy the experience. We wanted to help take that to the next level with T8 Spec.”
Just 250 examples of the special edition will be made, and all will roll out from Ford Australia’s Plant 2 facility in Broadmeadows, Victoria, after the enhancement and modifications are applied. Prices start from $138,888 (excluding on-road costs).
