As previewed, Volkswagen has unveiled its first fully electric GTI model in the badge’s 50-year history, with the new Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI at the Nurburgring 24 Hour in Germany.
Marking a major shift for the iconic performance nameplate, the new ID. Polo GTI combines front-wheel drive electric performance with familiar GTI styling cues and chassis tuning, while remaining positioned as a compact everyday hatch.

Power comes from a single front-mounted electric motor producing 166kW and 290Nm, enabling a claimed 0-100km/h sprint in 6.8 seconds – that seems about perfect for a GTI. Volkswagen says the model retains the traditional GTI character through a standard electronically-controlled front differential lock, adaptive DCC sports suspension and progressive steering setup. The kerb weight is 1540kg, which is quite light for a modern EV.
A new GTI-specific drive mode has also been introduced, sharpening throttle response and chassis calibration while altering the cockpit graphics and lighting theme for a more focused driving experience.
The ID. Polo GTI is powered by a 52kWh battery (NMC) pack, offering a claimed WLTP range of up to 424km. DC fast charging capability peaks at 105kW, with Volkswagen claiming a 10-80 per cent charge in around 24 minutes under ideal conditions.

Visually, the electric GTI adopts a more modern interpretation of the familiar formula. A red accent line stretches across the nose beneath illuminated badging and LED matrix headlights, while GTI-specific bumper bars, honeycomb detailing and 19-inch alloy wheels reinforce the sporty appearance.
At the rear, the model gains a distinctive split roof spoiler and illuminated taillight elements, while the black diffuser treatment further separates it from standard ID. Polo.
Inside, the cabin blends retro-inspired GTI touches with the latest digital technology. Red stitching, tartan-style seat trim and sports seats rekindle tradition, while the steering wheel features a red 12 o’clock marker inspired by motorsport.
Drivers can also activate a retro-themed digital display mode, transforming the instrument cluster into a layout inspired by the original Volkswagen Golf GTI from the 1970s.

Volkswagen says the electric platform has also improved practicality, with increased passenger room and a larger boot than the combustion-powered Polo GTI. Cargo space measures in at 441 litres with the rear seats in place, expanding to 1240L when folded.
Optional extras include a Harman Kardon premium audio system, panoramic sunroof, massaging front seats and specially-developed Bridgestone Potenza Sport tyres. Not yet confirmed for Australia, the potential local specs might be slightly different.
Pre-sales for the Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI are scheduled to begin in Germany later this year, with pricing expected to start at just under €39,000.
