2026 Cupra Formentor VZ5 2.5 TSI 5-cylinder confirmed for Australia

Cupra is keeping the VW Group 2.5-litre turbo five-cylinder engine alive, confirming it will be offered in the Formentor VZ5 in Australia in 2026.

Yep, the already-meaty Formentor VZ is getting a 2.5-litre TSI conversion, producing an impressive 287kW and 480Nm. That’s matched to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic with all-wheel drive, and active torque-splitter technology.

Even though the sprint across 0-100km/h is expected to be nothing short of breath-taking, it’s the sound we’re most looking forward to. That’s because five-cylinder engines seem to have a way with noise, a bit like half a V10.

This engine has lived in many fast Audis over the years, including the TT RS and RS 3. But it is set to be on its last legs as emissions laws and other factors corner it into extinction. It is, in our opinion, one of the coolest engines on the new-car market.

Being the new flagship variant, it’ll come with various performance enhancements and highlights, including a bespoke front aero kit and splitter, rear diffuser, and sports suspension and brakes. It also wears unique 20-inch alloy wheels that sit within pumped wheel arches.

Other highlights include copper-coloured exhaust tips, special bucket seats in the front called CUPBucket, ambient lighting, and a range of distinctive exterior colours: Century Bronze Matt, Dark Void, Enceladus Grey Matt, Magnetic Tech Matt, and Midnight Black.

Just 4000 of these bad boys will go into production, in left- and right-hand drive, and yes, a small batch is coming to Australia. Prices are yet to be confirmed but you’d want to get in quick.
