McLaren 788HS revealed, last hurrah of the 720 series

McLaren has unveiled the 788HS, a limited-production special that marks the end of the line that began with the 720S before evolving into the 765LT and current 750S.

Just 200 examples will be built for global markets, evenly split between coupe and Spider body styles, with every car individually finished through McLaren Special Operations (MSO).

Power comes from an updated version of McLaren’s 4.0-litre twin-turboc V8, producing 788PS (580kW) and 800Nm. Combined with a claimed dry weight of 1265kg, McLaren says the 788HS achieves the highest power-to-weight ratio of any model in the 720S family.

Performance figures include a claimed 0-100km/h time of 2.8 seconds, 0-200km/h in 7.0 seconds, and a top speed of 330km/h.

Beyond the engine upgrades, the 788HS receives the most comprehensive aerodynamic package ever fitted to the platform. New carbon fibre components include a larger front splitter, S-Duct bonnet, raised active rear wing and a Formula 1-inspired rear diffuser. McLaren says the changes increase downforce by 10 per cent compared with the 765LT.

The chassis has also been revised with bespoke suspension tuning, a 5mm reduction in front ride height and recalibrated engine mounts designed to improve driver feedback. Carbon-ceramic brakes derived from the Senna are fitted as standard, while the 788HS becomes the first model in this supercar series to adopt centre-lock wheels.

A new quad-exit titanium exhaust has also been developed, with McLaren promising a louder and more distinctive soundtrack across the rev range.

Inside, the cabin features lightweight carbon fibre trim, unique HS upholstery and a dedicated build plaque. Buyers will also have access to extensive personalisation options through MSO, including the availability of a full exposed carbon fibre body.

The 788HS is only the third McLaren to wear the ‘HS’ (High Sport) badge, following the MP4-12C HS and MSO HS. McLaren has not yet confirmed Australian allocation or local pricing for the limited-run model.
