2027 Mercedes-AMG CLE V8 coupe previewed, new Mythos model

The Mercedes-AMG V8 coupe is coming back. Yep, the mighty muscle car from Germany is returning, but not as a C 63, instead a special Mythos series based on the CLE.

Some teaser images have been sent out to stir up excitement, showing a prototype example of the new model being thrashed around during extreme cold weather testing in Sweden.

Unfortunately, no hard details have been released with the teaser images. However, according to an Autocar report, the CLE AMG will use a new 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, and rear-wheel drive by the looks of these images.

Sound familiar? Well, it’s set to incorporate a flat-plane crank design, which should help it spin to higher revs while offering quicker response – and an exotic soundtrack. There’s talk of power peaking beyond 485kW. And judging by the massive wing on the back, it’ll be fun putting all of that power to the ground.

Other highlights expected include a pumped out body with fat wheel arches, more venting and intakes than any other CLE, and of course serious suspension and brakes. There’s also unique wheels likely wearing staggered-width tyres.

This will be the second model under AMG’s Mythos series, following the PureSpeed open-top roadster. Just 250 of those were set for production, which means this CLE V8 is likely to be a very limited series as well.

Mercedes-AMG says it is conducting testing and validation on prototypes in Sweden to ensure reliability and performance, even in extreme conditions. The company said in a statement:

“While bearing a clear resemblance to the popular CLE, the extreme new model takes the concept several steps further, promising an even more uncompromising appearance and positioning itself as a genuine statement on the road – backed by a correspondingly powerful drivetrain and performance to match.”

A full debut is expected in the coming months, with specs and production allocation numbers potentially surfacing just before. It’ll be good to see the V8 back.
