Honda has confirmed the iconic Prelude nameplate will return to Australia in mid-2026. The sixth-generation model, which made its global debut last year, is set to arrive as a sleek two-door hybrid designed to blend nostalgia with modern electrified technology.
The new Prelude has been developed under the concept of ‘Unlimited Glide’. This is a philosophy aimed at delivering a driving experience like a “dynamic yet smooth turning glider” that promises a “special time” that makes you want to drive anywhere.

Interesting goals there but the important part is it aims to bring back the driving enjoyment and sporty spirit of the original. Power will come from Honda’s latest e:HEV hybrid powertrain, likely similar to the 1.5L system seen in the current Civic. It produces 135kW. Honda is yet to confirm local specs but power could be turned up slightly from the Civic.
Visually, the new model showcases a low and wide stance, helped by a front and rear suspension setup that’s actually borrowed from the Civic Type R. It will also come with the Type R’s Brembo brakes. Honda’s designers have incorporated a minimalist yet sporty design overall, with flush door handles, black chrome trimmings, and headlights styled to resemble a glider.

Inside, the Prelude’s cabin reflects the same glider theme, using a calming blue-and-white colour palette and intricate trim details inspired by Japanese paper and embroidery. The driver’s seat has been tailored for sporty support, while the front passenger seat offers a softer, more relaxed structure. A D-shaped steering wheel and digital instrument cluster reinforce the car’s modern and purposeful character.
Despite its sporty credentials, Honda says the Prelude will also offer surprising practicality. A fastback-style boot lid, folding rear seats, underfloor storage, and grocery bag hooks are included, for example.

First introduced in 1978, the Prelude played a significant role in Honda’s legacy across five generations, pioneering features such as four-wheel steering and ABS. It was also the first domestic vehicle offered with an electric sunroof.
The revival of the nameplate after 24 years aims to capture the spirit of innovation once again – this time with hybrid power. Prices and detailed specs are yet to be confirmed.
