Geely Starray EM-i details confirmed for Australia, new PHEV mid-size SUV

Geely Australia has confirmed details for its next model set for local showrooms, the Starray EM-i. This will slot above the existing EX5 as a mid-size SUV with plug-in hybrid technology.

Full prices and finer specs are yet to be uncovered for the Australian version, but the new model is based on Geely’s Global Intelligent New Energy Architecture (GEA) layout, just like the existing fully electric EX5.

Power will come from a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with plug-in hybrid technology. The petrol engine produces 73kW/125Nm, while an electric motor produces 160kW/262Nm, for a combined output of 193kW for the front-wheel drive setup.

Electric energy comes from an 18.4kWh battery (LFP) offering vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality at up to 3.3kW. Drivers will have three main driving modes to select from, including Pure (electric), Hybrid (both), and Power (for maximum performance).

As for the design, well, it looks like a generic modern SUV, with only a small grille at the front and an EV-like fascia, with a full-width LED light theme at the back.

The new model is 4740mm long, 1905mm wide, 1685mm tall, riding on a 2755mm wheelbase. For reference, that means it is 55mm longer in length, 40mm wider, and 25mm taller than the current Kia Sportage. The wheelbase is exactly the same.

Inside, overseas models showcase a futuristic two-tone theme, with a 14.6-inch touch-screen stuck on the centre fascia, with a 10.2-inch gauge cluster and 13.8-inch head-up display system.

The Geely Starray EM-i is scheduled to launch in Australia during the fourth quarter of 2025. Prices are yet to be confirmed.
