2025 Peugeot 408 GT drops 165kW PHEV for weak 100kW 1.2T

Peugeot Australia is getting ready to introduce the new 408 GT Hybrid for 2025, effectively replacing the PHEV (plug-in hybrid) version while bringing down the price tag.

Priced from $57,990, the updated model represents a significant shift in affordability compared with its predecessor, which started from $67,990. However, instead of the 1.6-litre turbo PHEV producing 165kW, the new model features a 1.2-litre turbo producing just 100kW and 230Nm.

It comes matched with an electric motor assist system that supplies up to 15.6kW and 51Nm, leaving a fuel consumption average of 4.7L/100km.

This might be seen as a bit of a kick in the guts for prospective 408 buyers, dropping from 165kW to what Peugeot calls an “impressive” 100kW. For reference, a standard Toyota Corolla hybrid rental car produces 103kW.

The 408 is classified as a premium mid-size SUV, targeting the likes of the Audi Q5 and BMW X3 and so on. This is what David Owen, general manager of Peugeot Australia, had to say about the new model:

“The Peugeot 408 GT Premium Fastback Hybrid represents a great opportunity for Aussie motorists — combining hybrid technology with the bold design and driving pleasure that our customers expect. It is a vehicle that delivers an exceptional ownership experience, proving that performance can coexist seamlessly with new energy, affordability and great European design.”

Proving that “performance can coexist” with new energy? Where is this performance side Owen speaks of? Checking VFACTS vehicle segment details, it looks like the new 408 will become the least powerful option in the class.

Key highlights for the new model include a panoramic sunroof now included as standard (previously a $2000 option), as well as wireless phone charging, a premium 10-speaker Focal sound system, and a 360-degree camera system. The interior is centred around a 10-inch high-definition touch-screen multimedia system.

Design-wise, the 408 GT blends SUV practicality with sedan elegance, featuring a sleek coupe-style roofline and Peugeot’s signature ‘Fang’ LED daytime running lights. Its new 19-inch wheels enhance aesthetics, while five exterior colour options – Elixir Red, Nera Black, Obsession Blue, Okenite White, and Selenium Grey – offer a level of personalisation.

Deliveries are expected to begin in the first quarter of 2025, with pre-orders now open. As mentioned, prices start from $57,990 (excluding on-road costs).
