2025 Hyundai Inster unveiled as new EV city car, confirmed for Australia

Following an official teaser a few weeks ago, Hyundai has now unveiled its new EV city car called the Inster. It has been confirmed to join showrooms in Australia at the start of 2025.

The Inster, which is a mashup of the words ‘intimate and innovative’, will be Hyundai’s first global A-segment EV. It’s inspired by the Hyundai Casper sold in Korea, only this is 230mm longer, and promises sophisticated technology, a spacious interior (for its size), and “segment-leading” range.

Two versions will go into production, equipped with either a 42kWh or 49kWh NCN LG battery. The standard model offers a range of over 300km, with a target of 355km for the long range battery when fitted with the 15-inch wheels.

Power outputs stand at 71.1kW for the standard and 84.5kW for the long range, with 0-100km/h coming up in a claimed 11.7 and 10.6 seconds, respectively. That should make for a nippy and fun little package, especially in city conditions.

When it comes time to recharge, the Inster takes 4 four hours using a standard 11kW AC plug (4.5 for the long range), or it can go from 10-80 per cent using fast-charging DC power at up to 120kW.

Aside from its impressive EV credentials, the Inster will showcase an innovative interior with lots of standard features, including twin 10.25-inch digital screens for the dash, wireless phone charging, and even a front bench seat option. There’s also a customisable door trim, a ‘walk-through’ front row with a flat floor, and active aero flaps in the front end.

Buyers will be able to select from a range on fun and interesting colours too, such as Newtro Beige two-tone for the interior, and exterior colours such as Tomboy Khaki, Bijarim Khaki Matte, and Buttercream Yellow Pearl. Much of the interior trim is made from recycled plastic (PET) bottles and bio-polypropylene derived from sugarcane.

Boot space is measured at an impressive 280 litres, or up to 351L with the sliding rear seats (yep, sliding second row). There’s also 1050mm of front legroom and 885mm of rear legroom. It certainly looks like a convenient little package.

Hyundai has also confirmed there will be an SUV/crossover version launching later down the track called the Inster Cross. It will feature rugged styling elements, likely with more ground clearance and different wheels and so on. More details will be announced further down the track.
