Audi has taken the drapes off its retro-themed electric coupe concept, the Concept C, which is set to inspire the new-gen TT. The reception has been mixed, to say the least.
It combines stylistic elements of the TT (A-pillar, DLO echoed in the bodywork, R8 headlamps, panel behind door) and the Avus concept (six-spoke wheel design). The overall aesthetic is minimalist, bordering on the same brutalism seen in the controversial Jaguar Type 00 and Tesla Cybertruck. Some corners have even compared the front end to a koala and moustached historical figures…
Looks aside, the car is mooted for production in 2027, sitting atop the same PPE electric car platform as the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman. This will help amortise the platform development costs across the two brands.
The two-seater concept features (shock, horror!) a circular steering wheel, a 10.4-inch screen that disappears under the dash, and the kind of solid metal surfaces that Audi used to be renowned for.
Could this be a return to form for Audi interiors? New chief of design, Massimo Frascella, seems to think so. This concept is the first debut of his work, having also contributed to the Defender, Discovery and Range Rover at JLR.
The Audi Concept C is on display at the IAA Mobility show in Munich, which runs from September 9-14.
