Toyota Australia has confirmed it will soon offer a hybrid option for the 300 Series LandCruiser, borrowing the same parallel setup from the Tundra pickup truck.
This is the first time the mighty LandCruiser is being offered with a proper hybrid package in Australia, and it’ll be available on the GR Sport and Sahara ZX grades from early in 2026. This is all part of the company’s expansion and evolution of its hybrid push.
While full specifications are yet to be confirmed, the setup in the Tundra includes an ‘i-FORCE MAX’ 3.4-litre twin-turbo V6 petrol engine paired with an electric motor assist system. Combined, you’ve got an impressive 326kW and 790Nm.
In the LandCruiser – if these outputs are carried over as is – it’ll become the most powerful LandCruiser ever offered in the showroom.
Being a parallel hybrid system means the petrol engine and the electric motor power the wheels, at the same time or separately. A series hybrid means an electric motor actually turns the wheels, with a combustion engine simply providing energy to power the e-motor.
The single electric motor here uses a clutch so the vehicle’s computer can determine when to engage either motor or both. At speeds above 30km/h the petrol engine is automatically switched on. It all works in tandem with a 10-speed torque converter automatic. Speaking about the soon-to-arrive option, Sean Hanley, Toyota Australia’s vice president of sales and marketing, said:
“With nine model ranges from the Yaris hatch to the seven-seat Kluger SUV now exclusively offered with our efficiency hybrid system, hybrids accounted for a record 48.9 per cent of our total 2024 sales. Now, with our performance hybrid system already powering the Tundra and soon, available in the LandCruiser 300 Series, Toyota is continuing to offer customers a hybrid solution that perfectly suits their needs and vehicle choice.”
More details such as prices and final specifications for the LandCruiser hybrid are set to be announced later in the year, before hitting showrooms in the first quarter of 2026.
