Further details on the upcoming MG U9 ute have been revealed, with a couple of extra surprises we weren’t expecting as well as indicative pricing
Sharing the same genes and powertrain as the LDV Terron 9, the MG U9 should develop 163kW and 520Nm, sent through an eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox with four-wheel drive. This means it is also a unibody ute design, where the cab and tray form one single pressing.
Three key features are among many which will differentiate it from its more work-oriented LDV counterpart. The first of these is independent rear suspension. The U9 uses a multi-link arrangement which should improve upon the leaf-sprung Terron 9’s already good road manners.
Secondly, a split, electric folding tailgate will make it more convenient to access the tray. Best of all, the rear bulkhead can fold down, extending the load area into the cabin – very unique for the ute class. There’s also driver’s seat massage, ventilation, front and rear heated seats and 12.3-inch infotainment and instrument screens.
The gear selector differs from the LDV as well and resembles an aircraft throttle controller. MG’s business director, Kevin Gannon, offered the following statement:
“Multi-link rear suspension is only the beginning of the MG U9 story. So many unique features from front to back enhance the experience. From its 2.5L turbo-diesel engine and ZF transmission, to our innovative two-step folding rear tail gate, that means better accessibility and safety for business or adventure use alike.”
How safe is the 2026 MG U9? It meets five-star Euro NCAP standards according to the brand, so expect a five-star ANCAP safety rating.
Full details will be revealed soon, but for now, MG has pegged pricing at between $55,000 and $65,000, depending on which of the three specifications you choose; Explore, Explore X, and Explore Pro.
MG is set to launch a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of the U9 later down the track, but specs and further details are yet to be confirmed.
UPDATE: MG has confirmed prices and specs, including a GVM rating of 3320kg across the range, and 6500kg GCM across the range. The engine produces 160kW and 520Nm, down 3kW on the LDV Terron 9. Prices start from the following (excluding on-road costs):
2026 MG U9 Explore: $52,990
2026 MG U9 Explore X: $55,990
2026 MG U9 Explore Pro: $60,990
