Hyundai’s next-generation Tucson is not far away, with the NX5 version expected to debut next year. Tantalisingly, a report from Auto Express indicates a 2026 Hyundai Tucson N performance flagship could be part of the equation.
Vice president of Hyundai’s N division, Joon Park, spoke with the English publication in detail about how hybridisation can be compatible with the performance arm’s values. He is quoted as saying:
“We’re not limiting ourselves to EVs. We will go further with the ICE-based cars as well; this is not the end of our journey. I cannot tell you exactly – but lighter, more agile, nimble, and exciting. These are the key elements that we are heading to.”
A 1.6-litre turbocharged ‘next-generation’ four-cylinder engine is likely to be paired with a hybrid system combining with a rear electric motor for all-wheel drive, delivering up to 224kW (300hp). Park said:
“One thing I can tell you is that if we have hybrid systems, the characteristics of our hybrid systems will be different. We have two different strategies for our hybrid systems: one for efficiency and one for neutral efficiency. If we have a hybrid system in our N cars, the strategy will be different; to have more power intensely.”
At present, the sportiest Tucson on offer locally is the 172kW/367Nm (combined) N Line Hybrid. Overseas, a PHEV version is available in 2WD and 4WD configurations with 195kW. Considering the state of play in the medium SUV segment, we think there’s a strong likelihood the NX5 PHEV will make it to Australia.
Getting back to the 2026 Hyundai Tucson N, if it does eventuate, it would benefit from an extensive tuning program, including wheel time at the Nurburgring. This could make it the best-handling and funnest medium SUV in the non-premium class.
In related news, it seems there is a next-gen i20 N in the works. It’s set to receive hybrid power as well, and could borrow or share some elements with the projected powertrain mentioned above. The new model is set to grow in size slightly, but lightest and agility will remain as key attributes.
