Volvo EX60 to debut world-first multi-adaptive safety belt

Volvo has confirmed its next fully electric SUV, the EX60, will make its global debut on January 21, 2026, introducing a major advancement in occupant protection; a world-first multi-adaptive safety belt system.

Set to debut with the new model, the technology will be a big step forward in Volvo’s intelligent safety capability. The system uses real-time data from the vehicle’s interior and exterior sensors to tailor protection based on each occupant’s size, seating position and driving situation.

In practice, the belt can adjust its load level depending on the severity of a collision and the individual’s physical profile. For example, a larger occupant in a major crash may receive a stronger belt tension to reduce the risk of head injury, while a smaller passenger in a lighter impact would experience less force to help prevent chest injuries.

Volvo says the innovation is designed to evolve over time through over-the-air updates, allowing the EX60 to continually refine its safety responses as new data and scenarios are analysed. This adaptive approach aims to make crash protection more personalised and effective than ever before.

The new technology of course aligns with Volvo’s ongoing commitment to occupant safety as it transitions into a fully electric future.

As for the EX60, it’s set to sit between the EX30 and EX90 in terms of size, ability and character, blending Volvo’s suave Scandinavian design with the company’s latest multimedia and connection systems. The global reveal will take place via a livestream event from Stockholm, Sweden.
