Current Toyota GR Supra production ending, August last call for Australia

Toyota Australia has confirmed the current-gen GR Supra will soon be deleted from local showrooms as global production comes to an end. Orders in Australia will cease from August.

It’s a bitter-sweet end to the current generation model, as it means an end to the raw, un-electrified rear-wheel drive sports car and an end to the BMW-Toyota tie-up and inline-six power. Production currently takes place at the Magna Steyr plant in Austria, along side the BMW Z4. Both use the BMW CLAR platform.

Toyota hasn’t specifically said when the next-gen version is coming, but reports indicate it is on the way and it is set to feature a new turbo four-cylinder hybrid. In a statement, Toyota Australia’s vice president of sales and marketing, Sean Hanley said:

“Its pulse-raising performance, sleek coupe design and thrilling dynamics helped raise the profile of our GR portfolio, helping to pave the way for other exciting models like the GR Yaris and GR Corolla.”

Interestingly, Toyota Australia is getting ready to launch the GR Supra racing car that will compete in the 2026 Supercars Championship. The racer is based on the current-gen shape, only instead of inline-six power it uses a specially-developed 2UR 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8. Hanley said:

“While customers will no longer be able to purchase their own GR Supra by the end of August, fans of the GR Supra will be able to follow its story when it lines up on the Supercars Championship grid in 2026 and beyond.”

Right now, customers have the GT, GTS and Track Edition (pictured above) variants to choose from, along with manual and automatic transmissions. All are powered by a BMW 3.0-litre turbo inline six (B58) producing 285kW and 500Nm.

It’s unknown if the next-gen model will continue with a manual option, especially as manuals are becoming rarer and less popular for buyers.

So far this year Toyota Australia has sold 103 examples of the Supra (through July), according to VFACTS figures. That’s down 27 per cent on the same period last year. Overall, Toyota says it has sold over 1400 examples across the six-year stint, since it arrived on the local market in 2019.
