Lexus LBX Morizo RR confirmed for Australia, debuts 1.6T with 8spd auto

Lexus has confirmed the awesome LBX Morizo RR will enter production and arrive in Australia in the first half of 2025. This limited-volume, high-performance version of the recently launched LBX small SUV promises to deliver a thrilling driving experience while maintaining the luxury edge of the Lexus brand.

The LBX Morizo RR, developed in collaboration with master driver Akio Toyoda (Toyota boss), also known as ‘Morizo’, features a potent 1.6-litre turbo three-cylinder engine, plucked from the GR Yaris and GR Corolla. It produces an impressive 206kW and 390Nm.

However, that is very interesting in itself, but it is not as interesting as the fact it is paired to a new eight-speed sports automatic transmission. Toyota is yet to offer an auto option for the GR hot hatches, but one is apparently being prepared.

Hooked up to an all-wheel drive system with an optional rear limited-slip diff, Lexus says the little SUV can sprint from 0-100km/h in just 5.2 seconds. That makes it the quickest SUV in the Lexus showroom, even overshadowing the big 273kW Lexus RX 500h F Sport Performance (6.2 seconds).

The LBX Morizo RR introduces a world-first Response-Enhancing Damping Structure (REDS). This technology utilises thermoset resin in the front lower control arms to enhance steering response and feel, further elevating the driving experience. Lexus Australia chief executive, John Pappas, said:

“The LBX Morizo RR is a game-changer for Lexus, encapsulating the exhilarating drive qualities of the LFA supercar into an everyday compact luxury car. It shows our passion for cars and builds excitement around our brand.”

The LBX Morizo RR builds on the strengths of the LBX Luxury and Sports Luxury grades, featuring a stiffer front platform and a rigid, wider rear to accommodate the AWD underpinnings. Bespoke (lowered) sports suspension, 19-inch alloy wheels, and 235/45 Continental SportContact 7 tyres (market regions may differ) enhance handling and stability.

There’s also a unique front bumper and grille and other aerodynamic enhancements for the body. Meanwhile the interior, built around the ‘Tazuna’ concept, features sculptured front sports seats, a sports steering wheel, and a 12.3-inch display screen with motorsport-inspired layouts. Chief designer Kunihiko Endo said:

“When you press the accelerator, it delivers performance that exceeds expectations. This high-performance model fosters enjoyable dialogue with the car, evoking smiles and an exhilarating sense of the extraordinary.”

Lexus Australia confirms the LBX Morizo RR will join the local lineup in early 2025. Final specifications and pricing will be announced closer to its launch date.
