Video: 2028 BMW M3 EV spotted at Nurburgring, looks epic fast

BMW has been spotted testing a prototype version of the next-gen, all-electric M3 (likely 2028 model) out on the Nurburgring, previously known as the ‘iM3’.

As far as we know, BMW will be launching an electric M3 and a petrol-based M3 for the next-generation. Both are set to be based on the company’s upcoming Neue Klasse platform, with the EV version likely to launch first.

Now, the interesting thing about the electric version, as seen here in prototype form, is that it will feature an all-new powertrain that – in testing – produces up to 18,000Nm.

Well, that’s according to Martin Vosswinkel, BMW’s voltage expert. He said in an earlier marketing video that this new model is the most “extraordinary project” he has ever experienced (see video below).

Power is set to come from four individual electric motors, all controlled separately via a new ‘super brain’ management system called VDX (Vision Driving Experience). It’s described as being capable of ‘redefining physical boundaries’.

Taking a look at the prototype being flung around the Nurburgring, it certainly looks like physics are involved. It’s difficult to fully understand without sound, but it is easy to see how rapidly it catapults between corners.

Even from the first corner, just after entering the track, the cameraman at CarSpyMedia providing the video did well to zoom in fast enough to keep up with the car as it rocketed away. It’s like it is playing in 2x speed.

Finer details are still under wraps but we’ve heard the figure ‘1000hp’ being thrown around before. Meanwhile the design is set to inspired be the Neue Klasse concept car from a couple of years ago (below).

The next-gen 3 Series (codenamed G50), which is also set to be offered in both combustion engine and electric forms, will be underpinned by the new platform as well and feature similar styling. Of course, the M version will get uniquely-aggressive intakes and so on.

More details will roll out in the coming months. Click play on the video below for an early preview.
