Chery Tiggo 4 Hybrid announced for Australia, price from $29,990

The Chery Tiggo 4, one of the cheapest SUVs and the cheapest turbo SUV on sale, is now available with a hybrid engine option.

Simply called the Tiggo 4 Hybrid, it features a 1.5-litre petrol four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor assist system. Combined, the little thing produces an impressive 150kW and 310Nm, making it one of the most powerful in its class.

Full specs for Australia are yet to be outlined, but the local arm says it will offer an official average consumption of 5.4L/100km. That’s not particularly impressive considering some hybrids offer 4.0-4.5L/100km, and in larger vehicles.

However, at least performance is fairly average as well. Acceleration across 0-100km/h comes up in a claimed 9.4 seconds. For a small package with 150kW, it should be quicker than that.

This isn’t about absolute efficiency or speed, though. Instead, the Tiggo 4 Hybrid is more about opening up the entry end of the market to a hybrid option. Because, prices start from just $29,990 drive-away, making it one of the most affordable hybrids on sale. Lucas Harris, CEO at Chery Australia, said:

“Adding hybrid power to our most accessible SUV is a natural next step in making advanced technology available to more Australians. The Tiggo 4 Hybrid combines smart design, real-world efficiency and unbeatable value – all in one package.”

Two variants will be available from launch, including the entry Urban and the top Ultimate. Both are front-wheel drive. Official showroom entry commences in July. See below for the starting prices (drive-away):
