In preparation for the launch of the second-generation 2025 MG HS this coming Friday, MG has released preliminary details of the midsize SUV, which promises to be a substantial improvement over the outgoing model.
Sharing its basic architecture with its SAIC-owned sister brand’s Roewe RX5, the new HS is 14mm wider (at 1890mm), 26mm longer (at 4,636mm), and 30mm lower in roof height. The wheelbase has been stretched by 30mm as well, to 2750mm.
From the outside, a large lower grille with air curtains either side now forms the face of the HS with sharper headlamps and a bonnet-mounted MG logo.
Boldly contoured side haunches mark out the side profile with a chrome spear adjoining the D-pillar and tapering rear roofline. The rear end now features a light bar spanning the width of the tailgate, book-ended by two C-shaped LEDs.
Inside, two 12.3-inch screens form the infotainment and instrument panels, for a more streamlined and EV-esque interior design. MG’s Australian chief commercial officer, Giles Belcher, said in a statement:
“The MG HS has been embraced by Australian families since its arrival, and the latest HS promises to redefine expectations once again. The new HS continues MG’s commitment to versatility and innovation, the with local specifications to be announced at launch in H2 this year (2024).”
Australian specifications are yet to be confirmed, but overseas it has been revealed with a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol producing 125kW and 275Nm, compared with the 119kW and 250Nm of today’s front-drive HS models. It’s matched with either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch auto.
Additionally, there is a 1.5-litre turbo plug-in hybrid that uses a 24.7kWh battery pack that allows up to 120km of electric-only range, which is a significant improvement on the 63km range of today’s model. The system develops 154kW in overseas form, offering a claimed 0-100km/h time of 6.8 seconds. The petrol does the dash in 9.4 seconds.
More details will be revealed soon, including Aussie specs and prices. Stay tuned.
